Fat Freddy's Drop headlining Gisborne Wine & Food Festival!

30 June 2011

The headline act for this year's Gisborne Wine & Food Festival has just been announced, and it turns out the hopeful rumours that have been going round town are true. New Zealand music legends Fat Freddy's Drop are confirmed to play the Festival.

Gisborne Wine Marketing Manager Simon Gardiner is thrilled that they've managed to secure one of the biggest acts in New Zealand music. Fat Freddy's are absolute legends. They are famous around the world for their incredible live performances, so this will be a special opportunity for locals to experience their mind-blowing show.

They will be supported by an amazing array of Gisborne musicians, DJs and a Kapa haka group, as well as celebrity MCs these will be revealed shortly.

In the meantime, Mr Gardiner says that tickets for the Gisborne Wine & Food Festival will be on sale from Friday July 15, and can be purchased from ticketek.co.nz or at the Gisborne Wine Centre.

The tickets cost $75 each. This includes bus transport to and from Waiohika Estate, entry into the venue, access to all the wine and food exhibitors, all entertainment including Fat Freddy's Drop.

Exclusive wine and food workshops will be additional to the ticket price. The programme for these will be announced shortly.

Mr Gardiner urges people to buy their tickets quickly, as ticket numbers are once again limited to 5,000 and last year sold out in record time.

The rugby will be shown live on the outdoor screen so those attending the Festival won’t miss the big game.

An interview with Fat Freddy's trumpet master, en route to The Hague Jazz Festival.

Fat Freddy's Drop originally hail from Wellington. The seven-piece band is renowned for its unique fusion of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno. They've toured Europe nearly every year since their international breakthrough in 2003, while their album Based on a True Story is the highest selling album by a New Zealand artist in the country's history. It won Best Album at the Music Awards and remained in the top 40 for over two years.

Fat Freddy's Drop are currently in the middle of their latest European tour. Trumpet master Tony Chang aka Toby Laing managed to find a few minutes to talk to us from their tour bus en route to The Hague Jazz Festival.

GH: Are you looking forward to playing the Festival?

FFD: We're really looking forward to getting to the East Coast again. Its been quite a few years. We love the place.

GH: What do you think of the opportunity to play as the lead-up to the Rugby World Cup final?

FFD: How many World Cup Finals are there? One! This is unique alright! Come

on Black!

GH: You must have had lots of other offers to play during this time. Why did you choose Gisborne?

FFD: Why Gisborne? Gisborne rules!

GH: Can you give us a hint of what the audience can expect?

FFD: Expect the unexpected. Unless you're expecting the unexpected already
